In 1955, she refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger and was then arrested. This incident then lead to the famous Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott.

In 1963, King lead a peaceful march in Washington, D.C. This march is the largest civil-rights demonstration in history with nearly 250,000 people in attendance. King then gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This book includes great photographs of the day's events.

The Civil Rights Museum is located in Memphis, Tennessee. This museum is formerly known as the Lorraine Hotel, the location of King's assassination. This website chronicles the American civil rights movement and includes photos of King's hotel room.

The R&B group, The Neville Brothers, wrote the song Sister Rosa as a tribute to Rosa Parks. The lyrics tell the story of Parks and how she helped to change opportunities for African Americans. This is a link to the video which also tells the story of Parks' day on the bus.


In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly after the incident, Robert Kennedy announced the sad news to a group of people in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is an audio of his speech.

On January 20, 2008, Senator Barack Obama spoke at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. This was King's former church where he was the pastor. Obama spoke during a sermon to an overflowing crowd of church-goers. This is a link to the video of this 30-minute address.
